Washington, DC 2011 During the Health & Sustainability Seminar - Business, Health & Sustainable Development, a round-table discussion was formed by Gregory Stackle, Head of RTKL's office in Washington DC, Luis Donoso, Director of the Medical Imaging Center at the Hospital Clínico in Barcelona, Diego Belmonte, the CEO of Esound Energy and Santiago Torres, Chairman of E-Diagnostic. The Chairman of the International Federation of Hospitals, Jose Carlos de Souza Abrahao, chaired this final debate panel. Each company presented its portfolio of services, focussing on aspects related to health and sustainability. As the main conclusion, the participants of the third panel emphasized the importance of directing their activities towards increased efficiency and integration based on technology and reorganization.

“EEUU es un país con un mercado potencial enorme, son grandes consumidores de todo y, en particular, de energía. Los estados del sudoeste presentan muy buenas condiciones para el desarrollo de centrales termosolares y existe todavía un amplio margen para reducir la dependencia de los combustibles fósiles”. Así lo asegura Mercedes Sierra, CEO de la filial en el país de Sener, una de las empresas españolas que ya han iniciado allí su andadura. “Estamos trabajando para una importante utility americana, que lleva a cabo un proyecto en el desierto de Mojave de dos plantas de colectores cilindroparabólicos. Tenemos, además, un contrato con el Departamento de Energía estadounidense para el desarrollo de un novedoso sistema de almacenamiento térmico basado en grafito y hemos empezado a explorar la posibilidad de realizar aquí nuestros propios proyectos de energía”.

Según el español Diego Belmonte, fundador y presidente de Esound Energy, para abordar este destino con éxito las compañías del sector deben plantearse tres prioridades básicas: “Adquirir un profundo conocimiento sobre el funcionamiento del mercado, muy diferente al español, basado en el subsidio directo a la tarifa; dedicar tiempo y esfuerzo a montar equipos locales; y tener recursos financieros y humanos suficientes para abarcarlo”. Desde su amplio bagaje en el sector, que canaliza ahora a través de esta firma que ofrece apoyo y asesoría estratégica para el desarrollo de proyectos de energías renovables, afirma que “España y sus empresas cuentan con una buena reputación en este campo, experiencia previa y lecciones aprendidas, además de con grandes avances tecnológicos, lo que supone una ventaja competitiva”.
